Divine Adventures

mom and heidi My mom and I loved adventures.  Whether it was a spontaneous invitation to tea by a spunky senior, a wrong turn that led to a tree-lined street of cherry blossoms, or a quirky storyteller met on a hike, we ate up every adventure together like giddy, sparkly-eyed thrill-seekers.

It’s no wonder, then, that when my mom was diagnosed with cancer, God gave her a vision that she was riding her “Adventure Bus.”  Fraught with steep drops, darkness, a river, and even fire, she needed only to trust the Bus Driver, who knew the way home.

My mom was a woman of deep faith who believed what God had promised in His word (Isaiah 43):

“When you pass through the waters I will be with you, and through the rivers they will not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you will not be burned, and the flame will not consume you.  Do not fear, for I have redeemed you.  I have called you by name, you are Mine!”

One night, after accompanying her home from a grim trip to the emergency room, I curled up next to her on her bed.  On the heels of a very strained season in our relationship, we drank in the closeness.  Truth be told, it had been years since we had experienced an exhilarating adventure together.  Our tears fell hot on the pillows as we acknowledged the pain in our relationship.

And then we dreamed.  We held hands and dreamed of heaven, where God would make everything right, restore, redeem.  Life would be beauty.  “In heaven, it’s going to be perfect, Heidi.  And, oh!  The adventures!  We will have adventures.”

As I write this post, it was one year ago tonight, March 13th, 2012, Susan Charis Nelson’s adventure bus finally arrived at its destination, safely home.  I can only imagine the divine escapades she is having!

For me, I am left profoundly missing her, deeply grateful for all she poured into me, and honored to live out her legacy.

But it won’t be long.  Because one day, my own bus will park at her gate.  And then, oh yes, Mama, we will have adventures.  In fact, the great adventure will have just begun.
